Health is quite the craze in the current world. People everywhere are talking about the secrets to physical health and finally, we’re seeing an increase in discussion about mental and emotional health as well. However, spiritual health is often left out of the conversation, and what we don't often realize is that relationships are the key to true spiritual health.
The importance of spiritual health
If you’re a Christian, you believe that we are not only body and mind but also spirit and soul. If you believe that, then it would follow that we need to keep all aspects of ourselves healthy, including our spirit. So then, how can we pursue spiritual health in our lives? The answer may be much simpler than you would expect.
When the Pharisees come to Jesus in the Gospels to ask Him what the most important commandment is, Jesus gives an answer that many of us are familiar with. He says:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.
It's all about relationships
If Jesus Himself said that these two commands encompass all of the rest of the law, we should probably pay attention to them. Jesus is literally saying that these are the absolute most important things that we should consider and keep in mind as we live our daily lives. Have you ever realized that, at their core, these two commandments are all about relationships?
To put what Jesus said into other words, He said that fulfilling all of the law is as simple as loving God and loving people. Think about it, just in the context of the 10 Commandments. If you love God, you won’t bow down to idols. If you love God, you will have no other gods before Him. If you love people, you won’t lie to them or steal from them. If you love people, you won’t murder them or dishonor them. All things are wrapped up in these two commandments.
What's standing in our way?
The problem lies in the fact that in the current state of our culture, we don’t value relationships. We value spending our time on “the grind” or we value “the hustle” and deem those things much more worthy of our time. What we need to understand is that relationships take time, and you make time for the things that you value.
Spiritual health lies in the state of your relationship with God and your relationships with others. Are you spending time with God regularly, or are you just giving Him your leftovers or nothing at all? Are you spending time loving and serving people, or do you show up to be loved and served because you’ve given all of yourself to another pursuit?
One thing is true: When you make that which is most important less important, it only causes confusion.
Start to prioritize your relationships instead, and watch how God blesses you.
